Patience with Others

This week you sit with one of the hardest things Stoicism asks of you: staying genuinely kind toward people who frustrate, oppose, or exhaust you. The seven passages move from a simple but demanding command, through the inner mechanics that make patience possible, to a final vision of what a person looks like who has actually built this into their character. Each day asks something slightly harder than the last, so stay with the discomfort when it comes.

Passage

'No soul is willing to be robbed of truth', he says. The same holds of justice, too, of temperance, of kindness, and the like. It is most necessary to remember this continually, for thus you will be more gentle to all men.

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations VII.63

Reflection

Marcus quotes a principle he will return to the very next day in Epictetus's voice: no soul is willingly deprived of truth. He broadens it here to cover justice, temperance, and kindness as well. Nobody wakes up choosing to be unjust or unkind in the way a person chooses a shirt. They act badly because something in their understanding is missing or distorted. Marcus says he needs to remember this 'continually,' not occasionally, because the moment you forget it, the person in front of you starts to look like a deliberate enemy rather than someone operating under a constraint they cannot yet see. Remembering it makes you gentler. Forgetting it makes you harsh.

Go deeper

Who in your life do you most need to apply this principle to right now, and what would you have to believe about their inner life to see their difficult behavior as a failure of understanding rather than a failure of will?

Practice

Unwilling Error

About 7 minutes

Choose the person who is hardest for you to be patient with right now. Write three or four sentences from their point of view: not a defense of them, but an honest attempt to describe what they might believe, misunderstand, or be unable to see that leads to the behavior that frustrates you. Then read it back and notice whether anything shifts. Keep it private; this is for your own clarity, not for them.
