Integrity
This week you are learning about integrity, the Stoic concept the Greeks called "homonoia" in its social sense, but which the Stoics grounded more personally in what Epictetus called "prohairesis" (your power of choice and character) being fully aligned with your outward life. In plain terms, integrity means that who you are in private and who you appear to be in public are the same person, with no gap between them. It is worth learning because that gap, however small, is a constant source of anxiety, self-betrayal, and quiet shame; closing it is one of the most reliable paths to genuine self-respect.
Passage
Then, in the place of all the other relaxations, introduce that which comes from the consciousness that you are obedient to God, and that you are playing the part of the good and excellent man, not ostensibly but in reality.
— Epictetus, Discourses 3.24.110
Reflection
Epictetus closes the week with the integrating idea: let your relaxation, your rest, your reward, come from knowing you are playing the part of a good person not ostensibly but in reality. All week you have been building toward this. Integrity is not a performance for an audience. It is not a standard you maintain under pressure and drop when no one is looking. It is the orientation of your whole life, and when it is genuinely yours, it becomes its own source of ease. The anxiety of pretence disappears. The relief of consistency takes its place. This is what the Stoics meant by self-respect: not pride in achievement, but the quiet satisfaction of being, in private and in public, the same person.

What would your daily life feel like, concretely and practically, if the gap between who you are in public and who you are in private closed entirely, and what is the first small step toward that?

The Week in Review
Spend twelve minutes reviewing the week. Look back at anything you wrote during the daily exercises. Ask three questions and write a short answer to each: Where did I act with integrity this week? Where did I fall short, without drama, just honestly? What one specific commitment will I carry into next week? Write the commitment somewhere you will see it.
