The Simple Life

This week you are going to sit with one of Stoicism's most practical and least sentimental ideas: that a simple life is not a diminished life, but a freed one. Each day's passage moves you further along the same current, from Seneca's opening reassurance that plain living is not punishment, all the way to his quietly startling closing claim that even the person we call poor already has more than enough. Pay attention to where you feel resistance as the week goes on. That resistance is exactly where the work is.

Passage

Just as it is a sign of luxury to seek out dainties, so it is madness to avoid that which is customary and can be purchased at no great price. Philosophy calls for plain living, but not for penance; and we may perfectly well be plain and neat at the same time. This is the mean of which I approve; our life should observe a happy medium between the ways of a sage and the ways of the world at large; all men should admire it, but they should understand it also.

— Seneca, Letters 5.5

Reflection

Seneca opens by ruling out two traps at once: the luxury-seeker and the penitent. Plain living, he insists, is not grim; it is simply life at a 'happy medium,' admired and understood by everyone. He is giving you permission to start here, not at some austere extreme. The goal this week is not to punish yourself out of your habits, but to look clearly at what you actually need versus what you have quietly decided is non-negotiable.

Practice

The Median Audit

About 10 minutes

Sit with a piece of paper and draw two columns. In the left, write three things you spent money or energy on this past week that you would call 'customary.' In the right, write whether each one is closer to Seneca's 'happy medium' or to what he would call luxury or penance. Do not judge yourself; just observe honestly. Keep the paper nearby this week.
