Being One, Not Seeming

This week's concept is "Being One, Not Seeming," the Stoic commitment to integrity understood as wholeness: being the same person inwardly and outwardly, in public and in private, whether anyone is watching or not. The Greeks and Romans didn't have a single term that captures it perfectly, but Seneca points directly at it when he distinguishes living well "not ostensibly but in reality" (a phrase Epictetus echoes almost word for word). The Latin word that comes closest is "integritas," which simply means untouched, whole, undivided. This week you'll learn what that wholeness looks like, why it matters, where it gets tested, and how to build it one day at a time.

Passage

Then, in the place of all the other relaxations, introduce that which comes from the consciousness that you are obedient to God, and that you are playing the part of the good and excellent man, not ostensibly but in reality.

— Epictetus, Discourses 3.24.110

Reflection

Epictetus connects 'Being One, Not Seeming' to something larger: the consciousness of being in right relationship with what he calls God, meaning, for Epictetus, the rational order of the universe. The relaxation he describes is real ease, not performed calm. When you know that your actions match your values, you don't need the nervous relief of distraction or entertainment or praise. The phrase 'not ostensibly but in reality' is the whole concept in four words. Playing the part of a good person for an audience is exhausting; being one is restful.

Go deeper

What form of 'relaxation' do you currently reach for when your inner and outer life feel out of alignment, and what would it feel like to replace that with the steadiness Epictetus describes?

Practice

Conscious Alignment Pause

About 2 minutes

At one point today (midday works well), stop for two minutes and ask yourself: right now, am I acting from what I actually value, or am I performing for someone? If you're performing, name who for and why. If you're aligned, just notice what that feels like in your body.
