Phronesis — Practical Wisdom

Phronesis (the ancient Greek word, pronounced froh-NEH-sis) is what the Stoics and Cicero called practical wisdom: the ability to see clearly what is actually true in a situation, judge what matters most, and act well as a result. It is not the same as being clever or well-read. It is the kind of wisdom that shows up in real choices, under real pressure, with real consequences. This week, through seven short lessons, you will learn what phronesis is, why the Stoics considered it the foundation of every other virtue, and how to begin cultivating it in the texture of ordinary life.

Passage

For the more clearly anyone observes the most essential truth in any given case and the more quickly and accurately he can see and explain the reasons for it, the more understanding and wise he is generally esteemed, and justly so. So, then, it is truth that is, as it were, the stuff with which this virtue has to deal and on which it employs itself.

— Cicero, On Duties 1.16

Reflection

Phronesis begins with a commitment to truth. Cicero opens On Duties by saying that the person rightly called wise is the one who sees most clearly what is actually the case in a given situation, and who can trace and explain the reasons for it. Practical wisdom is not a feeling or a style of thinking; it is disciplined attention to what is real. Before you can act well, you have to see clearly. This is the raw material phronesis works with: truth about the situation in front of you, not the situation you wish were in front of you.

Go deeper

Think of a recent decision where you acted on what you hoped was true rather than what you knew to be true: what would it have taken to see the situation more clearly before you acted?

Practice

One True Thing

About 5 minutes

Choose one situation in your life right now that you have been thinking about in a vague or wishful way. Sit quietly for five minutes and write down, in plain sentences, only what you know to be factually true about it. No hopes, no fears, no interpretations. Just what you can verify. Notice how different that feels from your usual mental chatter about it.
