The Morning Meditation

The Morning Meditation is a daily Stoic practice of deliberate mental preparation done before the day begins, or at its close in review. The Stoics had no single Greek term for it, but they called this kind of forward-looking rehearsal "praemeditatio malorum," which in plain words means thinking through difficulties before they arrive, so they cannot catch you off-guard. This week you will learn why this practice exists, how to do it, and how it quietly changes the texture of every day you live.

Passage

How have you hitherto borne yourself to gods, parents, brother, wife, children, masters, tutors, friends, connexions, servants? Has your relation to all men hitherto been: 'not to have wrought nor to have said a lawless thing to any'? Remind yourself of the kinds of things you have passed through and the kinds you have had strength to endure; that the story of your life is written and your service accomplished.

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations V.31

Reflection

Marcus Aurelius begins not by looking forward, but by looking back: have you acted rightly toward the people in your life? This is the first move in the Morning Meditation, the honest self-accounting. Before you prepare for the day ahead, the Stoics believed you need to know where you actually stand. Taking stock of your past conduct is not about guilt; it is about getting your bearings, the way a navigator checks position before plotting a new course. Today you are learning that the practice starts with truth-telling to yourself.

Go deeper

When you look honestly at how you have treated the people closest to you this past week, what is one pattern you notice that you would not want to carry into the week ahead?

Practice

The Honest Inventory

About 5 minutes

Sit quietly for five minutes and ask yourself Marcus's questions, slowly and literally: how have I borne myself toward the people in my life? Write down two or three honest answers, not evaluations, just what you actually notice. This is your baseline for the week.
