Setting Intentions

This week's concept is Setting Intentions, and the Stoics had a precise practice for it. Before acting, they would pause and decide, clearly and deliberately, what kind of person they were going to be and what kind of work they were going to do. This isn't motivational self-talk; it's a practical discipline for closing the gap between who you are and who you want to be. The week's theme, Morning Preparation, gives you a natural moment each day to do exactly that: before the world rushes in, you decide how you will meet it.

Passage

How have you hitherto borne yourself to gods, parents, brother, wife, children, masters, tutors, friends, connexions, servants? Has your relation to all men hitherto been: 'not to have wrought nor to have said a lawless thing to any'? Remind yourself of the kinds of things you have passed through and the kinds you have had strength to endure; that the story of your life is written and your service accomplished.

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations V.31

Reflection

Yesterday you asked what you are here for. Today Marcus asks a sharper question: have your actions so far actually matched that answer? This passage is a brief self-accounting, a look back before looking forward. The Stoics understood that intention only has weight when it is checked against reality. Reviewing how you have borne yourself toward others is not self-criticism for its own sake; it is the honest measurement that makes tomorrow's intention meaningful rather than wishful.

Go deeper

When you look at how you have treated the people closest to you over the past week, where is the largest gap between the person you intend to be and the person your actions describe?

Practice

The Honest Ledger

About 5 minutes

Take five minutes and write down, without softening, three recent interactions: one where you acted as you intended, one where you fell short, and one where you are not sure. This is not a confession; it is data. You are learning what your intentions actually need to cover.
