You Are Not Your Body
This week you will sit with one of Stoicism's most demanding and freeing ideas: that you are not your body. Starting Sunday, you will map the three-part self and learn to locate yourself correctly within it. By mid-week you will be tested on what that location actually costs you in daily life, and by Saturday you will be asked to make a real commitment about how to live from the inside out.
Passage
This whatever it is that I am, is flesh and vital spirit and the governing self. Disdain the flesh: blood and bones and network, a twisted skein of nerves, veins, arteries. Consider also what the vital spirit is: a current of air, not even continuously the same, but every hour being expelled and sucked in again. There is then a third part, the governing self. Put away your books, be distracted no longer, they are not your portion. Rather, as if on the point of death, reflect like this: 'you are an old man, suffer this governing part of you no longer to be in bondage, no longer to be a puppet pulled by selfish impulse, no longer to be indignant with what is allotted in the present or to suspect what is allotted in the future.'
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations II.2
Reflection
Marcus opens by doing something almost clinical: he takes you apart. Flesh, breath, governing self. He names each layer not to disgust you but to help you find your footing. The governing self is the only part he asks you to protect, and he asks that with urgency, 'as if on the point of death.' You have probably spent today already serving the other two layers without noticing. This passage is your invitation to notice.
Go deeper
When you trace the last hour of your morning, which of the three parts, flesh, vital spirit, or governing self, was actually in the driver's seat, and how did that show up in the specific choices you made?
Practice
The Three-Layer Audit
Sit quietly and take a plain sheet of paper. Draw three columns: Body, Breath/Energy, Governing Self. Think back over yesterday and write in each column every demand that came from that layer: hunger, fatigue, anxious alertness, a decision you made on principle. Do not judge the list; just sort it honestly. Then circle the one item in the Governing Self column you are most proud of, and one item in the Body column that went unquestioned when it probably should not have.
